Student Chapters

Student chapters are affiliated directly with American Water Resources Association national. At least 15 student members and/or candidates for Student Chapter membership may petition AWRA Headquarters for recognition as a student chapter. They must have two sponsors who are members of AWRA, one of whom must be a faculty member at the petitioning campus, and their bylaws must be approved by the AWRA President. Any university or college can have a student chapter. AWRA-WA sponsors student chapter dinner meetings each year, and student chapter members are liaisons to the AWRA-WA board of directors. Please contact us if you are a student interested in starting a new AWRA chapter!

We currently have two active student chapters: The University of Washington (UW) and Central Washington University (CWU).

Chapter Leadership

Alessandro Martinez, 2025-26 UW Chapter President

Alessandro is an environmental engineering undergraduate at the University of Washington and the current AWRA UW Student Chapter President. Since this past summer, he has been working as a research assistant in UW’s Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, helping collect field samples and run experiments investigating 6PPD-Quinone in urban streams and stormwater. Additionally, Alessandro is a member of the Engineers Without Borders UW Chapter and is on a team helping design a pit Latrine for a primary school in Malawi. Outside of engineering, Alessandro plays clarinet in the UW Wind Ensemble, enjoys time with family, and relishes winter weather activities.

Julian Howe is earning his M.S. in Geological Sciences at Central Washington University. With a focus in Environmental Geochemistry, his thesis is on water treatment to prevent the formation of disinfection biproducts in groundwater during aquifer storage and recovery operations.
